Ich beschäftige mich mal mehr, mal weniger intensiv mit Elektronik, seit ich 15 Jahre alt war (1969 :-). Damals war das deutsche Farbfernsehen gerade im Entstehen; bei den meisten Radio- und Fernsehgeräten waren noch Vakuumröhren im Einsatz. In meiner Heimatstadt Heilbronn war die Firma Telefunken (Halbleiterfertigung) angesiedelt. Dort konnte man als Bastler gelegentlich Ausschussware geschenkt bekommen – Dioden und Transistoren, deren Messwerte außerhalb der geforderten Toleranzen lagen, die aber im Prinzip funktionsfähig waren. Teile (Widerstände, Kondensatoren, Potentiometer etc. sowie Bausätze) bestellte man bei Radio RIM (München). Die wurden in den 1990ern von Conrad geschluckt.
I have been tinkering with electronics since the age of 15 (which was back in 1969). Back then, German color TV was on the verge of being a viable option (for wealthy individuals at least), but most households had a b/w TV (or none at all). Vacuum tubes were ubiquitous in radio and TV receivers. Fortunately for me, my home town had a Telefunken plant where discrete semiconductors (diodes, transistors) were made. As an aspiring nerd you’d sometimes get a chance to grab a plastic bag full of rejects that didn’t meet the required tolerances but were basically functional. Back then there was a company in Munich called Radio RIM that more or less held the monopoly for the supply of components (resistors, capacitors, etc.) and electronic kits. Radio RIM went belly up in the 1990s, the carcass was acquired by Conrad Electronic.
Computer? Angefangen mit Großrechnern (Uni Stuttgart, CDC 6600 / CYBER 174) in Fortran IV programmiert, während der Diplomarbeit auch ein wenig Assembler gelernt, um hardwarenahe Binäroperationen (Bitshift, Maskierung) durchführen zu können, die in Fortran nicht möglich waren.
Computers? Yep, started out with the real big rigs (CDC 6600 / CYBER 174) at the University of Stuttgart computing center. For my diploma thesis I needed to learn some assembly language to do some bit shift and masking operations that couldn’t be done in Fortran IV.
