Diese Lap-Steel-Gitarre (»Hawaii-Gitarre«) habe ich bei meinem ersten USA-Besuch im Dezember 1983 in einem Pfandleihhaus im Haight-Ashbury-Distrikt in San Francisco für 40$ gekauft. Es ist eine Magnatone »Troubadour G-70«, Jahrgang 1955 (die werden inzwischen mit 450 bis 800$ gehandelt).
Ich habe sie jahrelang auch auf der Bühne benutzt, in letzter Zeit wurde sie nur noch selten aus dem Koffer geholt. Sie wurde mit 420 farbigen Schnipseln (Kabel-Isolation) verziert, die bei diversen Elektronik- Projekten angefallen sind.
In der zufallsgesteuerten Farbigkeit mag sich manchem die Vielfalt der Erlebnisse und Erinnerungen von ganz hell bis ganz dunkel widerspiegeln – oder man sieht das Ganze einfach als lustiges Dada-Fluxus-Objekt an, ganz ohne moralischen Überbau 🙂
I bought this lap steel guitar during my first visit to the USA (December of 1983) in a pawnshop in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco for 40$. It’s a Magnatone »Troubadour G-70«, 1955 vintage (current market price between 450 and 800$), done in spectacular »mother of toilet seat« finish.
It has been used at home and on stage for quite a number of years, but lately it has rarely seen the light of day, basically sitting in its case, waiting for someone to pick it up. I thought it might make a good (if temporary) carrier for the multi-colored collection of cable insulation clippings that have accumulated over the months and years. There are now 420 of those literally strung up 🙂
The colors were chosen randomly; if you’re a romantic you may see this as a symbol for the variety of memories and experiences in life – from sparkling bright to dull and dreary. Or else, just consider it a tongue-in-cheek dada or fluxus object!
